2023, acrylic ink on nylon stockings

Statement
“Muddy Stockings” explores themes of sensuality and shame through repeated screen prints of the artist pouring water over themself in a bathtub. Hung up to mimic stockings hanging to dry on a clothesline, the prints resemble dirty stains, that upon a closer look reveal themselves to be repeated screen prints of the artist pouring water over themself in a bathtub. The images reference rituals of cleansing and purifying as well as the intimate and often sensual act of bathing oneself, a private moment during which one develops a complicated relationship to their body. The stockings speak to the intimate and the bodily, as undergarments are meant to hide and obscure. The viewer takes on a voyeuristic presence, witnessing the artist’s shame and desire as it is on display for the world to see, no longer concealed.
